Annual pump service test (NFPA 1911)

A pump that can't make rated capacity at 150 PSI net pump pressure is a pump that fails its annual test — and a department that has to answer to an ISO inspector. We repair the centrifugal, the transfer valve, the relief valve, the primer, the packing, the intake side, the discharge side. Then we test it on the pit and hand you the paperwork.

The pump is the apparatus. The rest is transportation.

If the pump can't make rated capacity at 150 PSI net pump pressure, that engine is hauling around an expensive transportation vehicle with a water tank. Centrifugal fire pumps fail in predictable ways: packing leaks, impeller wear, shaft seal failure, transfer valve sticking between volume and pressure, primer that won't pull a vacuum, relief valve that won't hold. We've worked all of them.

Annual pump service test — done right, on paper.

NFPA 1911 pump service tests aren't just "hook it up and pump for a while." Rated capacity at 150 PSI net pump pressure for 20 minutes. Then 70% at 200 PSI, 50% at 250 PSI. Pressure control system test. Engine speed and gauge verification. Vacuum test. We run the test, document the results, and tell you straight whether the pump passes — and what it'll take to make it pass if it doesn't.

Brands we work on.

Hale (Qmax, Qflo, DSD, CBP), Waterous (CSU, CSUY, S100), Darley (LSPB, ZS, AGE), Rosenbauer N-series, Pierce PUC, and the older Hale and Waterous mid-mounts still in service on 1990s-era engines. Pump panels: Akron, Elkhart, FRC, Class1 / Innovative Controls multiplex integration.

Questions about this service

What's the difference between an annual pump test and a service test? +
NFPA 1911 calls the annual test a "pump service test" — it's a periodic verification, not a one-time certification like an acceptance test. It confirms the pump still meets its rated performance after a year of service.
What if the pump fails the test? +
We document the failure mode, fix what's repairable on-site (packing, primer, gauge calibration, minor valve work), and write a scope for anything heavier (impeller replacement, mechanical seal, transfer valve rebuild). Then we retest.
Can you do the test at our station? +
If your station has access to a draft pit or a static water source (pond, drafted from a pool, an approved hydrant) we can run the full test on-site. Otherwise we coordinate use of a regional pump test pit.

Recent Fire Truck Repairs.

A representative slice of recent on-site work — the kind of failures that take an apparatus out of service and the kind of fixes that put it back in. Pump packing, DEF system faults, aerial hydraulics, multiplex electrical, brakes, charging systems, and everything in between.

Pump won't draft on the test pit

Rebuilt packing on a Hale Qmax mid-mount; pumped capacity at 150 PSI net pump pressure with paperwork.

Engine 4 — cranks but won't start

Cummins ISL fuel rail pressure fault; replaced high-pressure pump and primary filter; back in service by morning.

Aerial outrigger won't extend

Traced 12V supply fault to a corroded ground stud; replaced harness section; outrigger cycled and locked clean.

Tank-to-pump valve seized after mutual aid

Removed and serviced the Akron actuated valve; flushed debris; re-tested under draft.

Multiplex panel showing all faults

Class1 IO module replacement after a wet-environment fault; reprogrammed and tested every output.

Rear discharge gate leaking under pressure

Replaced seat and seal kit on a Waterous CSU two-and-a-half-inch gate; pressure tested to 250 PSI.

Engine derating mid-response

Detroit DD13 DEF system fault — failed quality sensor and clogged dosing valve; cleared and re-ran regen.

Air brakes won't release after sitting

Replaced moisture-fouled relay valve and added a desiccant cartridge to the air dryer; full system test.

Aerial rotation slow and creeping

Rebuilt rotation hydraulic motor and replaced worn slew bearing balls; tested full 360° rotation under load.

Scene lights flickering on the foreground

Charging system pulled down by a failed alternator and one weak battery in a four-bank string; replaced both.
