Diesel Engine

Fire Truck Diesel Engine Repair. Every Major Engine. Every Major Problem.

Certified diesel mechanic with 25+ years on heavy-duty engines. We work on Cummins, CAT, Detroit Diesel, PACCAR, Navistar, and Mack/Volvo powertrains found in fire apparatus.

A modern fire apparatus diesel is half engine, half emissions computer. When the DPF won't regen, when the DEF system codes, when the engine derates on the highway returning from a mutual aid call — that's not a job for whoever can get to the firehouse next week. We diagnose the actual fault, fix what's broken, and don't replace parts to find out.

Modern apparatus diesels are 80% emissions computer.

A 2010+ heavy-duty diesel is a fuel-burning machine wrapped around a tightly controlled emissions system. When the DPF won't regen, when the DEF dosing valve clogs, when the EGR cooler cracks and dumps coolant into the intake, the engine derates — and a fire truck that's derating to 5 MPH on the highway returning from mutual aid is a problem. Generic diesel shops will throw parts at it. We diagnose it, fix the root cause, and prove the system is back in spec.

Older apparatus engines.

Plenty of departments are still running pre-emissions Cummins ISL, Detroit Series 60, CAT C12/C13, and even older mechanical injection diesels. We service them all — and we'll tell you straight when a rebuild is the smart move versus chasing one more failure at a time.

Diagnostic capability.

Insite for Cummins, DDDL for Detroit, ET for CAT, Premium Tech Tool for Mack/Volvo, Diamond Logic for Navistar/International. Not a generic OBD-II reader — the real factory-equivalent tooling that reads, configures, and forces actuators correctly.

Questions about this service

Can you do an in-frame rebuild on-site? +
Light in-frame work and head removal can happen on-site if the station has the bay space. Full in-frame overhauls usually move to a shop environment for cleanliness and lift access — we coordinate that with a partner facility.
What about emissions-related warranty issues? +
Heavy-duty emissions warranty work has to go through an authorized dealer. We can diagnose, document the fault, and point you to the right OEM channel — and handle the non-warranty failures the dealer won't touch fast enough.

Recent Fire Truck Repairs.

A representative slice of recent on-site work — the kind of failures that take an apparatus out of service and the kind of fixes that put it back in. Pump packing, DEF system faults, aerial hydraulics, multiplex electrical, brakes, charging systems, and everything in between.

Pump won't draft on the test pit

Rebuilt packing on a Hale Qmax mid-mount; pumped capacity at 150 PSI net pump pressure with paperwork.

Engine 4 — cranks but won't start

Cummins ISL fuel rail pressure fault; replaced high-pressure pump and primary filter; back in service by morning.

Aerial outrigger won't extend

Traced 12V supply fault to a corroded ground stud; replaced harness section; outrigger cycled and locked clean.

Tank-to-pump valve seized after mutual aid

Removed and serviced the Akron actuated valve; flushed debris; re-tested under draft.

Multiplex panel showing all faults

Class1 IO module replacement after a wet-environment fault; reprogrammed and tested every output.

Rear discharge gate leaking under pressure

Replaced seat and seal kit on a Waterous CSU two-and-a-half-inch gate; pressure tested to 250 PSI.

Engine derating mid-response

Detroit DD13 DEF system fault — failed quality sensor and clogged dosing valve; cleared and re-ran regen.

Air brakes won't release after sitting

Replaced moisture-fouled relay valve and added a desiccant cartridge to the air dryer; full system test.

Aerial rotation slow and creeping

Rebuilt rotation hydraulic motor and replaced worn slew bearing balls; tested full 360° rotation under load.

Scene lights flickering on the foreground

Charging system pulled down by a failed alternator and one weak battery in a four-bank string; replaced both.
